Michael Fischer remembers Carl Albert

I 've been an extreme "Vicious Rumors" fan since 1987. I discovered the band in 1987 after I moved to California. At that time, my boss was a band promoter and local L.A. sound man. One night working at the studio, I began to sift through his cassette submissions from bands he promoted. Luckily, I found a cassette tape that was equal to hitting a slot machine for a million dollars. It was marked "Vicious Rumors" in hand-written blue ink.
It contained three songs: "Condemned", "Digital Dictator" and "Lady took a Chance". Needless to say, I was blown away when I pressed play! I had never heard anything like this band before. The songs were great, the guitars were melodic, the drums were pounding and the singer kicked my ass HARD!!!
I played the shit out of that 3 song tape everyday wondering who the hell this killer band was??? The attraction to the bands sound was that I couldn't get enough.

One month later in 87', I was about to see my first "Vicious Rumors" show. The concert was at the "Country Club" in L.A. during the infamous "Digital Dictator Tour". I was very excited to see the band live for the first time.
Such as in all my new music experiences, I had very high expectations to see a stellar performance from this mysterious bay area band I knew nothing about.

That night before the show, my friend guitarist "Mick Zane" from "Malice" and I were walking to the club through the back parking lot excited to see the show. We noticed a nice looking blonde in jeans as she was unloading guitar cases out of the trunk of a car. I remember seeing a little guy with curly black hair helping her. As he was putting on his leather jacket, I noticed that it read "Vicious Rumors" on the back. As we passed by, I jokingly asked if they needed a hand with their stuff. I remember the little dude looked up and said something really funny that made me laugh.
At first, I thought he was part of the road crew. ( Duh ) As we exchanged a one second laugh, I said "My names Fish, whats yours?" He replied "I'm "Carl", I sing for Vicious Rumors"!!! I began to rave to "Carl" about how much I loved the band. He was very surprised that I knew of few of the songs by title.

From that moment on, my perception of "Vicious Rumors" was everything I thought it would be. Two hours later "Vicious Rumors" delivered the goods!
They opened with "Replicant" and went right into "Digital Dictator" just like the record. It was exciting to see the band perform such classic tunes as "Towns on Fire" and "Condemned". "VR" blistered "Worlds and Machines"! I couldn't believe how good the band was live. "Lady Took a Chance" and "Larry Howe's" drum solo totally brought the roof down. To this day, my first "VR Show" was one of the most sacred highlights of living in L.A !
